My Short film 'Bloodstained Footprints' was chosen by Cinebarre for their short film selection-preshow in America. They basically screen a selection of chosen short films before the feature instead of commercials and it's a great opportunity to get your work out to the public. 'Bloodstained Footprints' was screened before 'The Men Who Stare At Goats' and 'Law Abiding Citizen'.

The evening was filmed on the Canon 5D Mark II due to its awesome low light capabilities. Although the camera wasn't a big fan of the strobe lighting in the club it performed exceptionally well overall. New Promo Shoot

It's always nice to have a friend who's willing to offer free professional photo shoots to help promote your business. Rick Trainor is really starting to perfect his Stobist work in his Photography and I was happy to pose for him for a few hours. Although I tend to be behind the camera as much as possible, I was very happy with the results. Green Screen Test Shoot

After months of watching countless numbers of Chromakeying/ Green Screen tutorals I decided to set up and shoot my very own Green Screen Test. When it comes to video production, I learn more through physically doing the job rather than from reading manuals. However, online video tutorials are great for referencing and checking that you have followed the correct procedures.

We just wanted to say a huge thank you we absolutely love the DVD, when we first started booking the wedding I had considered not having a dvd as I don’t feel comfortable with cameras but I’m so glad that Phil changed my mind. We first chose you from searching on the net and hearing the reviews of how you were unobtrusive and caught natural footage but I have to admit I never expected our wedding DVD to turn out anywhere near as great as it has.

So far everyone that has watched either the highlights or the edited version of the wedding have all had tears in their eyes and have genuinely been moved at how you recreated the day. You managed to capture emotions that we didn’t even notice ourselves on the day so for us it is like watching our wedding as it happened with the best seats in the house. The way that you used the music and changed the speed of the film shots really did help to build up the main parts of the day.

I know that myself and Phil are bias but I genuinely have never seen such a natural, professional and truly amazing wedding dvd and my family and friends have agreed so I hope you don’t mind but I have passed your number to a some of them.

Sound Assignment

The purpose of this assignment from the Lights Film School was to get you to showcase your ability to capture high quality dialogue sound in both moving and non moving situations. I needed to complete two shots for this assignment.

1st shot – Good Dialogue vs. Bad Dialogue
I captured the dialogue of an actor with an in-camera microphone for 20-30 seconds and then captured the same dialogue of an actor with a off camera microphone for another 20-30 seconds. We had to be able to recognize the difference in tones between the two clips. It also gave me an opportunity to start experimenting with off camera microphones and this assignment showed just how important they are.

2nd shot – Good Sound Movement vs. Bad Sound Movement

I had to capture the sound of a moving actor as they spoke and walked around. In the first 20-30 seconds of the video I had to include multiple edit points. During each edit point the camera had to change it’s proximity to the actor. I used an in-camera and off camera microphone to capture dialogue when the camera was at different distances to the subject.

The purpose of this assignment was to force you to make mistakes with your sound, both in capturing and in editing. Then I had to show my understanding of how to fix these issues.

Master Membership

Scattered Images Video Production was recently awarded Master Membership of the IOV (Institute of Videography) – a UK-based trade association which promotes professionalism in video production.

The IOV has over 1,000 members in the UK & Europe specialising in event, corporate and freelance video services. This is a significant achievement for Scattered Images as the IOV has a challenging accreditation process. Accredited members first have to pass online exams to achieve Associate Membership, whilst full accreditation is not awarded until after satisfactory samples of work have been submitted to an assessment panel. In addition to their new accredited status, all IOV members agree to act in accordance with a strict Code of Practice which includes offering their clients access to the IOV’s Arbitration Service.

Short Film: Bloodstained Footprints

At 0100 hours on the morning of Tuesday 21st July, filming ceased on the short film 'Bloodstained Footprints'. A short film which I wrote for my second Lights Film School assignment. The short piece offers a brief insight into the challenges and struggles of a person who is adjusting to civilian life after serving with a military unit in a war zone for so long.

When writing the production schedule for the shoot last week, I opted to film for one day rather than spreading the filming over two days. The main reason for this was to avoid any continuity errors in the footage which my assessors would be on the look out for! It has also given me an extra dedicated day of editing on the short piece which is so valuable when you've got a lot of corporate and wedding work to get finished.

A Tripod and Dolly ready to go

I had a good friend of mine, Rick Trainor from Red Sky Photography as my main camera operator on the Canon 5D mark II with inter-changeable lenses. The low light results from the camera were outstanding (as usual) and so crucial as the majority of the shots were night scenes. I found the actor, Tim, through Rick and it was his first attempt at acting. He went above and beyond what was expected of him and I was very grateful.

I incorporated as many methods of filming into the scenes without overdoing it. Rick got his hands dirty and got to play with the Merlin steadicam, car mount and tripod dolly on the set. I tried to mix up stable tripod shots with monopod shots that offered slight movement to the footage to offer the scene more energy.

Back to the Books!

Like most people in my profession, I aim to become a successful British filmmaker. But there are gaps in my knowledge and understanding in the subject. So, I decided to go back to the books and I enrolled in the Lights Film School based in New York City. It is an online course where you learn about both the art and science of filmmaking. The programme teaches you all aspects of filmmaking from idea conceptualization and screenwriting to how to direct, edit and market your films to film festivals and through other film marketing channels.

I've recently completed my first assignment in screenwriting with positive feedback so far. Keep checking the blog or site for news of my next assignment, which focuses on Cinematography. I've just finished pre production on my short film 'Bloodstained Footprints' and I'm due to start filming in the next few weeks (with a little help from a few friends :)

I'm not easily impressed when it comes to new video technology. I make it my business to stay ahead of the pack and I'm always trying to find new ways to improve my productions. Recently I had the chance to sample the results of Canon's new DSLR/HD Video camera namely, the 5D MkII. On paper it would be ludicrous to think that a digital SLR camera could rival the latest top of the range video cameras but in many ways, it does just that!

Filming on the short piece has already begun with two successful day and night shoots already under our belts.
